Health Update Time

A while back I posted about my health challenges. (See here and here if you aren’t caught up). I’ve been placed on Stelara for my ulcerative colitis (“UC”), which is an immunosuppressant that is aimed at UC and at psoriatic arthritis. It’s helping with the UC though is not putting me in remission. Regardless, I’llContinue reading “Health Update Time”

Travels with Sprout

Sprout and I have spent the last week adventuring. Sunday morning I attended the memorial service for my beloved friend, bonus father figure, Buddhist Monk, and author Terrence Keenan. It was at Hoenji, which is the Zen Center of Syracuse. After the service was over my husband and Sprout joined the gathering for lunch, andContinue reading “Travels with Sprout”

Feeling at Home

Seth and I have been struggling mightily with our household lately. Sunny knows there are only a few weeks before she goes home, and she’s ramped up her behaviors significantly. Intellectually I get that she’s pushing us and her sister away so that leaving is easier. I get that she’s only 10, and is struggling.Continue reading “Feeling at Home”

The joys of chronic illness

How it’s been going: As most of you know, I collect autoimmune diseases. I’ve been diagnosed with seronegative rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. Who knows which of those diagnoses is accurate, but the upshot is that my immune system likes to run amok and damage healthy tissues. The result is pain, stiff swollenContinue reading “The joys of chronic illness”

How does trauma affect behavior?

On Thursday, I packed up Sunny and Sprout and went to Boston with my Dad for my niece’s graduation weekend. Seth had to work, and doesn’t yet have the kind of seniority he needs to take off his weekend shifts. So it was my Dad and me and the girls. To say I was apprehensiveContinue reading “How does trauma affect behavior?”

How our vacation ended

I wrote a couple of posts about our vacation, then just dove into the Sunny situation without explaining how we were home in time for Sunny to arrive on our doorstep. I’m going to try to write about it with restraint and an adult perspective. Vacation kind of sucked. Ok it really sucked. I lovedContinue reading “How our vacation ended”

The Uncertainty is Killing Me

I can’t give any details because of privacy, but we might, maybe, possibly have Sprout’s 8-year-old sister joining us. But it’s foster care, so who the heck knows. It’s complicated. The agency has put in a petition. The court date is while we are on vacation 10 1/2 hours away from home. The agency doesn’tContinue reading “The Uncertainty is Killing Me”

Summer Heat and Fun… with a Side of Fatigue

So far this summer I have taken one or both girls to: A carnival with rides and fireworks Swimming at a local lake Swimming at the local pool Wading in a stream at a nearby park looking for crayfish On a boat ride along the Erie Canal To the MOST (the local kids’ science museum)Continue reading “Summer Heat and Fun… with a Side of Fatigue”
