Having kids with physical limitations is illuminating. After a battle with insurance, they finally approved an adorable little yellow smiley face wheelchair for Sunny. I pushed for it because there are so many things we can’t do with her now: we can’t go to the mall, or the State Fair, or the little village festivalContinue reading “A wheelchair = liberation”

Representation Matters, Again
The other morning I found a video of Say Yes to the Dress Lancashire by accident. Well, ok, not really by accident, it’s sort of a guilty pleasure. I simply adore Gok. I think he’s pure magic with women who have body image issues and I’m totally here for it. But I digress. The brideContinue reading “Representation Matters, Again”
Closing in on 1,000 isn’t “lucky”
Sprout has been in foster care 921 days. By the time we get to court next, it’ll have been 963 days. I am a nervous wreck. I don’t know what to expect in court other than an excruciatingly emotional day. I’ve worked as a lawyer in the system but never got to this stageContinue reading “Closing in on 1,000 isn’t “lucky””
A Happy Shindig
Tonight we went to a barn dance at the farm where Sprout rides horses. It’s a program primarily for disabled people, so most folks who ride there have physical or intellectual disabilities or both. It’s an amazing program. I found it a JOY to be surrounded by people who weren’t giving the kids weird looks.Continue reading “A Happy Shindig”
Training, Daily
Every year I’m asked by our agency if I’ve done any “training” on foster parenting. It’s part of our recertification process and I want to talk a little about the training I do almost daily. To become a foster parent, there is a training requirement. It’s a class, which for us was 11 weeks IContinue reading “Training, Daily”
Some Sunshine
On Tuesday, Sprout’s sister “Sunny” (8) joined us for… well, for now. It’s foster care so who the heck knows for how long? There are some relatives who may take her and her three other siblings (5), (12), and (13) soon. Or maybe it won’t work out. Maybe she’ll leave next week. Or maybe she’llContinue reading “Some Sunshine”
27 phone calls and 10 emails later…
Sprout has been in need of a couple of new providers: physical therapy, and regular therapy. You’d think I’d be able to just pick up the phone and make a couple of calls and we’d be all set. But no, foster parent life ain’t that simple. The problems start with Sprout’s insurance. It’s Medicaid andContinue reading “27 phone calls and 10 emails later…”
Sprout’s Little Bitty Voice Matters
We had a home visit by Sprout’s new case worker yesterday, and my brain has been churning with thoughts ever since. For the most part it was a perfectly ordinary home visit. She brought Sprout a new teddy bear and a fuzzy blanket that’s pink with green frogs on it. Sprout was super polite aboutContinue reading “Sprout’s Little Bitty Voice Matters”
“Tiny” needs a new nickname
When she first came to us, “Tiny” was deemed failure to thrive. She was so small and so sick, that calling her “tiny” came naturally. Since then, she’s been diagnosed with a whole host of medical issues that keep her small, not least of which is a form of skeletal dysplasia, a.k.a. dwarfism. She’s aContinue reading ““Tiny” needs a new nickname”
