I flipped through my memories the other day on Facebook and came across this one: Overheard, man and woman talking in the elevator.Woman: How old is the baby now?Man: 5 weeks, and she has lungs like an opera singer!(conversation ensues all about the man’s baby.)Woman: Did you know I have a baby now? How does trauma affect behavior?
On Thursday, I packed up Sunny and Sprout and went to Boston with my Dad for my niece’s graduation weekend. Seth had to work, and doesn’t yet have the kind of seniority he needs to take off his weekend shifts. So it was my Dad and me and the girls. To say I was apprehensiveContinue reading “How does trauma affect behavior?”
Odds and Ends
Visit Fallout I wrote last about the visit last Saturday being especially hard on the kids. What I should have predicted was the continuing fallout. On Sunday, the girls woke up late and were just off somehow. So I asked them if they needed hugs and they both exclaimed “Yes!” and rushed over to me.Continue reading “Odds and Ends”
Surrender
Yesterday we went to court and witnessed Sprout’s loving Mama surrender her legal rights to her. It lasted only a little over an hour, but was one of the most difficult hours I’ve ever been through. Mama’s rights were explained to her in detail, and the surrender agreement reviewed in which Seth and I committedContinue reading “Surrender”

We tackled the play room (my god what a mess!) and threw away broken toys and toys they’re misusing to beat on each other.Continue reading “Trauma changes everything”
Post Visit Fallout

Those visits can look a lot of different ways. For some families they’re supervised at the Department of ChildrenContinue reading “Post Visit Fallout”
Reactions to “I’m a foster parent”
To say the least, we have gotten a wide variety of reactions from people about our being foster parents. For the most part we have been very lucky – our friends and family have supported us. That’s not always the case. One friend of ours who has her own biological son and also fostered forContinue reading “Reactions to “I’m a foster parent””
